Logging In To Your Asus Router

If you want to set up your new Asus router, perform diagnostics tasks, or make changes to your current network settings, you will need to access the Asus router admin panel. All you will need is an Asus router, access to the internet, and a web browser.

Follow these easy steps to log into your router:

  1. To get started, make sure your Asus router is switched on and then connect your device to the internet. You can use LAN by connecting your computer to the router with an Ethernet cable. For Wi-Fi, search for available networks. On your computer, you can click on the Network icon located at the bottom of your screen. For mobile devices, go to ‘Settings’, and select Wi-Fi. Once you have chosen your network from the list, log on by entering your Asus user credentials.

  2. Now that you are connected to the internet, you can access your Asus router admin panel using the web browser of your choice. You will need the Asus router’s IP address to access the admin panel.

In the address bar, enter the router’s default IP address. The most frequently used IP addresses for Asus are 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.0.1. Your Asus router login screen should appear.

If the login screen did not open, you can search for your IP on the Asus router default address list, select your Asus router from the list, and enter the IP address.

If you have changed your router’s IP, open command prompt in Windows, type ipconfig | findstr /i "Gateway" and press enter. Linux systems use the prompt: ip route | grep default and for OSX type: netstat -nr | grep default. This will display your IP.

  3. Sign in by entering your username and password in the respective fields. If this is the first time you are signing in, enter the default Asus username and password. For security reasons, it is best to change your password. Enter a password of your choice, and re-enter it to confirm.

  4. You are now logged in and should see the admin panel for your Asus router. Here you will be able to adjust the settings and configure your router to suit your individual needs.

Who are ASUS?

Asus, or AsusTek Computer Inc., is a multinational electronics company based in Taipei, Taiwan. Asus has been producing high-quality products since 1989 and is considered one of the best in the market. Their products include personal computers, tablets, All-in-One devices, smartphones, servers, computer components, and of course, routers, to name a few.

Asus manufactures routers that compete directly with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Linksys. Asus routers, as a rule, features Broadcom chipsets, greater memory than the average router, considerably faster processors, antennas you can remove, and versatile USB ports.

Whatever your need, Asus has a collection of excellent routers that caters to the needs of households, businesses, and especially the online gaming community. Asus routers feature impressive speeds, AiProtection, multiple guest networks, and a VPS server.

Gamers favor Asus routers since they are fast and packed with many desirable game-specific features, including multiple LAN ports, and gaming acceleration technology.

Asus router security was tried and tested, coming under fire from various hacks and attacks over the years. As a result, Asus released patches to Live Update and implemented a comprehensive security program to ensure enhanced security on all their routers.

In 2007, Asus became a well-known brand in North America when it revolutionized the personal computing industry with its Eee PC. The company is a pioneer and trendsetter in the mobile device arena, with a focus on augmented and virtual reality products. By 2017 Asus was ranked the 5th largest personal computer vendor in the world.

Comparing Asus Router Models

There are a few differences between the various router models on offer from Asus. To help you understand various models and how they can benefit you, here are some guidelines to help you.

  • R model vs. U model

These two models have only very subtle differences. R models offer slightly broader network standards compared to the U models. The R models are typically sold at major retail stores, however over time will become available for sale online.

For the average user, these differences would not have any significant impact on the performance of the router. Your best option is to select the cheaper model available from all major retailers.

Decide what level of performance you need from your router by selecting the tier that offers the best performance to satisfy your needs.

  • The AC-Tiers and how they differ

To help you decide how much you want to spend, use this tier guide to select the model that best suit your needs. To keep it brief, we focus only on the significant difference and not the full specs of these models.

  • RT-AC56U compared to RT-AC66U

    (or RT-AC56R compared to RT-AC66R)

RT-AC66U runs 3x3 Mimo, where RT-AC56U runs 2x2 Mimo. AC66U can thus achieve faster speeds.

If your home or office space has a good signal and no major obstructions like walls, AC66U will be faster. If, however, your signal is not that clear, AC56U is sufficient as the upgrade will have very little impact on the overall performance.

A popular model in this range is:

    • ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900
  • RT-AC66U compared to RT-AC68U

    (or RT-AC66R compared to RT-AC68R)

RT-AC66U uses the single-core MIPS based CPU, where the RT-AC68U uses the later duo core ARM-based CPU. AC68, therefore, offers better performance.

This improved performance will only be noticeable if you use things like High Definition, VPN, or torrent downloads. For normal video streaming or online gaming, AC66 will be more than adequate.

A model in this range that is receiving good reviews are:

    • ASUS Dual-band Wireless-AC1900
  • RT-AC68U compared to RT-AC87U

    (or RT-AC68R compared to RT-AC87R)

RT-AC87U uses 4x4 Mimo and offers rapid speed and first-rate performance. It is the latest model in this tier group. Much like AC56 and AC66, this difference would only be significant in an unobstructed environment with a strong signal.

The cost difference is significant but well worth the investment.

Models in this range that are popular include:

    • ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless AC2400
    • ASUS RT-AC86U Dual Band Wireless Router AC2900
  • RT-AC87U compared to RT-AC3200 (or RT-AC87R)

RT-AC3200 are for those users who connect various devices to their router. You can allocate speeds and regulate performance by dividing the signal from the 5GHz antennas.

The performance and coverage of the AC87U remain better.

These models, in the high-end spectrum, are receiving good reviews:

    • ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AC5300
    • ASUS RT-AC88U Wireless-AC3100
    • ASUS RT-AC3200 Wireless-AC3200
